From the late 70's this compact low power radio has always been popular with hams interested in HF mobile operation.
The design has plug in boards rather tightly fitted into radio slots. This makes troubleshooting down the component level is very difficult without the use of extender boards as shown in the photo above right.

This ham HF transceiver perhaps is the most popular Yaesu unit maintained and restored today. It's solid design and hot receiver make it a real winner for SSB, CW and digital enthusiasts.

Note to FT-101ZD owners. It seems Yaesu designs started moving away from the plug in board design when this radio came out. It uses only two of the four 101 extender boards, the 10 pin and the 14 pin.

This four board set more closely matches original extender set supplied by Yaesu back in the 80's. All four boards are single sided. These single sided boards have the very robust original Yaesu connectors that have been remove from 101's that were scrapped.
